Claudia Holitzki

 Rosa
Hello,
this is my text about the experiences.
Sadly is, that I cant send a picture. Because they are all on my camera
and I am not able to copi them on the computer (Theres is no cord with me).

My first experiences at the USA
I am a student from a German school and I am in Arizona for an exchange for three an half weeks. I am a very interested person and I want to try very different things in my life. Different food is one of these parts. I think it is normal, that there are dishes I’ll like, but also some, which are not my taste. While I stay here I will try to do as much experiences how I can.
So many is different. The weather is different, much dryer than in Germany and the sky is blue, every day. And the countryside is a big difference because I’ve never seen so many stones and rocks, it is so beautiful. But many little things are different too. For example: the many, big advertisements next to the roads or the big trucks, which the most peoples drive. I had very big anticipations but till now, all of them were more than complied.
I am here for two weeks now and I’ve already seen so many new things. Like Las Vegas, Rawhide (build like an old western-town), phoenix, the Watson lake, an amusement park or the Grand Canyon. And with every day it’s getting better and better. I am so happy to have made this decision.
I feel great and I will enjoy the next two weeks, like the first.

1. I can accept foreign food, but only if I try it and like it. I try  every new food. I think, if I don't try it, I don't know if it's tasting good or not. But if I don't like the food, I don't eat it. Because I think why I have to eat food I don't like, when I can eat food that I like? But I eat nearly everthing here. The food here is good. A little bit diffent than the food in Germany, but that is really not bad. It's good, because I can eat German food as much as I want in Germany and I'm here to try new things.
I'm really look at the environment. I think the environment here is so awesome. Here are so much things, that we don't have in Germany. For example the desert. We din't habe anything like this in Germany. The landscape is so ample and beautiful. I like all these areas, where are nothing. Only a road and sometimes a range or a small village.

2. I don't had so much expection, but the most that I had are true. For example the big cars and stores. I hab the expectation, that all people here are friendly, but my expextation became excalled. The people here are so much friendlier than I think before. Everybody open you the door ir talk to you. Especially in the school. So much students come to you and say: "Hsy, my name is... How are you? Do you like it here in America?" That's so cool!
3. On this picture you see the housing complex where I live here in America and on the background are the desert. I know, we have housing complexes in Germany too, but here their are so different, they have bigger gardens here and so on...
It's my favourite picture, because we have the same thing in Germany, but it's a such big difference. (between the countries)

Lorena
I'm the type of traveler who wants to experience as much as possible about the location I am at. I want to get to know about the culture, the food, and all of the people here in America. I have enjoyed just relaxing, shop and seeing all of Prescott. I love the food gere, especially Taco Bell, and the people are very nice too. I was a little bit irritated as we went in Wal-Mart and I saw next to me was a pink gun that you could easily buy there. I was told everything in America was so much bigger than it was in Germany and that is true! The fridge is two times bigger than ours in Germany. I really like that Abbee can drive because that is not allowed in Germany until you are 18. We have done a lot of shopping at the mall here in Prescott and also in Phoenix! I am glad the shopping here is not so expensive! I notice that there is a lot more nature here than in Germany and the mountains are very beautiful. So far I am enjoying my stay here in America!
This is my favourite picture because it is out of my sight, like I see Arizona every lovely day. We are sitting in Abagail's car and driving. I'm sitting in the passenger seat and looked out to see a beautiful view so I just had to take a picture. It is one of my favorite pictures from America so far because it will always remind me of how beautiful it was here.

Lorena

Sarah
I love to travel! I like it because I learn new things and I get to see different parts of the world. When I'm adult I want to see as much of this planet as I can. I want to experience different countries, and to learn new cultures and languages. I don't like to spend my time just sitting at home. I really like adventures, thats why I went to the USA. To taste new food is really cool, because there is so much on this planet and getting a look from outside of Germany is astonishing to me. During the first few days in Prescott, I didn't know where to look first. It was breathtaking, and my camera was in continuous use. I can't believe that I am really here. I'm flexible with the things we do and where I stay.
2.What were your expectations? What is true and what is not?
When I first found out that we were going to America I was so excited! I really wanted to, but I was afraid that my host family was  not going to be nice or that it would be to hard to communicate, but luckily, it is not like that. My host family is so friendly and cute. They help me if I do not know the right word or if my sentence is not good english. They are so sweet, and I don't want to go home. I knew that a lot of Americans were really nice to each other but I had no idea how true that statement actually was. I assumed that most of Americans do not eat healthy and not very much of them have guns. But in reality, they are all so nice, a lot of them eat healthy, and everyone has a gun. It's funny because now I understand why people own guns. My understanding on why people have guns is because my host family explained to me that the criminals will always find a way to get a gun, but the good people won't be able to have one. So when a criminal comes into a croud of good people, there is no one to shoot the bad guy. I assumed that a lot of people were going to be really funny and crazy and it is true! They are all very different from one and other and that is awesome.

3. Show me your favourite foto so far and describe it in 3 sentences.
I love this picture because it is of Sierra and I. We stayed in Phoenix with her mother for a weekend and we went shopping! In this picture we are at lunch at a sushi restaurant, because all 3 of us love sushi. I'm really thankful I get to stay with Sierra's family for the time I get to spend in America, and for the little adventures.

Wiebke
When I heard first of the exchange between a school in America and our I was really excited and wanted to go with this exchange whatever will come. So now I am a exchange student in 9th grade and I`m really glad to be here. The food here is only 30% of what I expected. So my family is a cool, sweet healthy one and we eat a lot of fruits, vegetables and salad but on the other side they go only out to have fast food because of me (I love fast food). Regulary they go somtimes out to have fast food when everybody is wild of french fries or another fast food. I notice that they often go  out to have lunch or dinner but to go out here it isn`t so expensive like in germany. The funniest thing I ate since I`m here was selleri with peanut butter it tasted interesting but it wasn`t really my thing but a great experience.

Yes, I had a few expectations about America and Americans. But I recognized that the most things Germans think about  Americans are wrong. Only one thing that everything is bigger than in Germany is toally right. When I went my first time to wallmarkt I was flashed and then I was excited about the size from the party m&m`s pack :). I like here that everyone can wear what he or she wants. Everybody is an individual. In Germany most of the time when you not wear something cool, something that is "in" your get fast an outsider so the most people wear the same kind of clothes.

When I flew from Charlotte to Phoenix it was amazing. We flew four hours over canyons and fields, big fields. I saw also a big fire and all the smoke it was huge.

1.What kind of traveler are you?
1) I like it because I get the opportunity to taste new food and I have no problem appreciating foreign food. When I'm traveling to new countries I make sure to look at the environment because I find it really amazing that the environment is so different all over the world. Every time I come to another country I am so overwhelmed by the ways of culture different from my own.

2.What were your expectations?
2) A few of my expectations for how America was going to be were that the people here were going to be very friendly and lovable, and also that the culture here was going to be very different from Germany's. Another expectation was that virtually all people here have pets. I was right that most of the people here are very friendly and lovable. I have run into a few that were not very nice but that is okay because I understand that there are different people with different personalities  everywhere in the world. The culture is very different from ours in Germany!

3.Show me your favorite picture so far and describe it in 3 sentences.
3) My favorite picture is from when we were at Castles and Coasters. I like it because when we went there this weekend in Phoenix it was so funny there, and we all had so much fun. We rode roller coasters, played games and did a ton of other awesome things.

Assignment for German students                                                                                                      Niklas

When we went into the restaurant it looked like it was from an American Film. The first time I bit into a burger, it felt like I was flying. But after the next one I ate, I saw that a burger is a lot to eat. When I ate the last couple of bites, I became very full and I thought; Why did I choose the big one. The next morning, we ate an American Breakfast which was delicious, but I couldn't eat all of it after the two great meals I had earlier, I felt full and during that day we drove to our Host family. As we landed and left the terminal, I felt warm air and I looked around and I saw the aridity of the land. I saw limousines lining the streets. We walks a round in Las Vegas and in night and its looks amazing.

Timo
I think that I can accept foreign food because I try all of the food what my host mother make. I love to be outside because of that I realize so much more things. Bevore I traveled to the USA I heard that the Americans eat a lot and now I know that's right. In Germany we eat one Main course and here they eat the Main course and some chips and a lot of bacon. Someone told me in Germany that the Americans only eat unhealthy food. I think this prejudice is not right, because in my family we eat many fruits and vegetables.
On my picture you can see a little Horney Toad we caught him when wewere  on a offroad trip whith the Jepp. After I had made this picture he bit me into my finger and he fall on the ground and run away.

Written by Timo Enders

1. I can accept the food in America. If my family makes dinner I try all the food that they gave  me. It is rude if I don't try it, it seems i was not interested, because if I came to a family i have to try all the things that they gave it to me!
I look at the environment, because it's important otherwise the streets are so dirty and that is disgusting.
Yes I realize new things, I saw Colorado it's so beautiful. I saw 2 new supermarket, they were so big.

2. My expectation was that all Americans are heavy but they aren't, some people are fat but some people are slim it's different.
And I thought that the food is so much and it'sthe truth. It's all so big, if I say can I have a little bit there give me so much. And the last Ithink  that there  are all  so nice and they are so nice! They buy me something, some food and the flight back to Arizona.

That's my favorite picture, because I'm so afraid of spiders and I'm so proud that I held "rosi". The old lady talked to me, I have to do this, that is my chance and I can tell everybody that I held a Big Spider. I took 2 sticker for a evidence, that was cool.  Jessica

Nathalie
I am that kind of traveler, who loves to learn more about a country and a culture.
I like to try new food and the first time I saw the enviroment I thought it is definitely the oppsite of Frankfurt.
Before I came to America I thought everybody only ate fast food, but it's wrong!
My hostefamily cooks every evening and they don't usualy go to a     restaurant.
All Americans are so friendly and so far I have a really good time.

This is my favorite foto.
You can see Ivy, her dad and me in front of a big cactus.
At this day we were in Pheonix in Butterfly wonderland and after that we were at a baseball game.

Ana-Lena
This is my favourite picture so far.  And those are my three sentences to decribe it:
On this picture you can see me "flying" a simulater at the aeronautical university in Arizona. It was a great experience tho I "flew" very bad. I think there aren't a lot places where you can do that in Germany.

Leonie

I am that kind of traveler who wants to see as much as i can, because maybe it is only your only chance. I ate a lot of differnet things in other countries so i am not afraid to try something new. When i am in Germany i look that i don’t consume much plastic and i seperate my trash. This is not my first time in America so i know that the Americans have no feeling for plastic consume. For example: We went to Walmart and just bought a few things and we had like i think twelve plastic bags. In Germany no one will have so much plastic bags only for a few things. The second thing ist that Americans go everywhere by car. It is just 2 minutes away, they take the car. They don't walk. Maybe that is one of the reasons why are the most americans are overweight.

I really thought that most Americans are overweight, but this is not the truth. I mean, i see a lot of big people, but not as much as i thought I would. Maybe we are in the wrong state to see more overweight people. I thought that the american have a lot of more food in there supermarkets and that is the truth. I never seen so much candy, sodas or other stuff.

Donna, her mom and myself went hiking and letter boxing! Best thing ever! It was awesome!

Americaexchangeexperience

I had some very good and few bad experiences. One of my
good experiences was when we arrived at Northpoint. I saw the family and I
thought it’s completely the right one for me. I did so many different very nice
things, like going to the Grand Canyon, going down to Tucson
and of course our trip to Lake Powell and the Antilope Canyon.
On the first weekend my host mother brought me to another host family at 8:30am.
We should set off by mobile home but my friend's host father wasn’t
finished repairing the mobile home. He actually said to Toni – my host
mother- that it is completely ready and
we can set off. So we waited and waited and waited for hours and hours…Finally we
set off at 8:30pm 12 hours later!! Could be, that this is typical American? Nice, no stress, just laid back. The ride to the Grand Canyon
took about 4 hours, so we slept at a camping ground. On Sunday we finally reached
the GRAND CANYON. Apart from the delay, it was so nice that you can’t really explain it. Our trip to the Grand Canyon and the trip with the Germans were one of
the best experiences. I shouldn’t forget the five days in Tucson. It was a field work trip which is a
trip were you go much deeper into a topic than at Ernst-Reuter. The students at Northpoint
do a trip like this twice a year. The first one before they start the topic and
the second before they have to write the final exams. The topic from our trip
was immigration. We talked to experts and went to a Streamline Court and saw a play about
immigration. On Wednesday we had trouble in the camp. The reason was some students
bought food before we had our dinner. So the whole had to wait. They did it because they were so
hungry which I can understand. I was hungry as well but I didn't buy
anything. After dinner the teachers spoke to the group about the incident. Some students apologized, some did not say anthing.
The teachers told us that it was completely unrespectable which I can partly understand but I do not understand why it was such a BIG deal because teenagers are always hungry. Another reason was that we had far too much to do. This boy who shouted at the teachers was right in what he was saying but not how he said it.
The problem was he really screamed at the teacher’s face and insulted her, so Mrs. Wagoner
called the police and they took him out of the camp. It had been better if the students were honest in the first circle where we discusses the incident not waiting until somebody explodes. All in all the trip to Tucson was very interesting and good. I really enjoyed to say my own oponion and that we had time to think about this difficult topic. I did not not know anthing about immigration in Arizona. I got a little bit confused, because it the boarder petrol played with numbers and it did not correlate with reality.

This was the experience from the trips I did. The experience
which I’ve got in the normal American life was even better. Now I know how
Americans live and how structured their life is. I can’t write more about the
life, you have to live with Americans to know it.

The USA-Exchange was extremely good, I did so many new
good experiences and I hope I could upgrade my ken. I’m so glad that I went
with the exchange to America
because you see the life from I different point of view.
thanks to Ernst-Reuter-School.

Anthea

School

When I first saw North Point Academie in Prescott I thought how small it was. There are not so many students and all of them are very friendly! Beeing here is one of my best expirience in Arizona. My first schoolday was the best. There were many studentsa wearing costumes. It was really interesting to see how different the school is. In northpoint we have to wear a schoolshirt. I think it is good that they don't have to wear a full uniform, because they can show you their personal style. It is also good, because you know that the students are all from North Point. I really like that they have a special topic they talk about in every subject. My favourite subject is crew, because you can meet other Americans. The Americans are very creative and not as mean as the Germans. Everyone is friendly and talks to you!

My family

I love my hostfamily in America! They did many trips for me and we had a lot of fun together. For example we went to the Grand Canion together. It was the most beautiful landscape I 've ever seen. They were really close to me and we loughed a lot.
